ABOUT ME

Lucius Caldwell

I am a scientist and athlete who helps clients develop skills, tools, and behavioral strategies to improve performance, increase or regain range of motion, and reduce pain, by improving quality of movement.

APPROACH

Every human deserves to know how to conduct basic maintenance on their own body.

In an increasingly busy world, finding the time for a daily mobility practice can be challenging. Yet, for many of us, a lack of mobility--which may present as pain or reduced performance--is the limiting factor that prevents us from enjoying our favorite activities. My approach focuses on three pillars:

  • Skill development (movement)

  • Tissue restoration (mobilization)

  • Environment design

  1. Movement Archetypes

    • Learning the basic shapes that form the bookends of athletic movement is a critical first step to addressing limited mobility.

    • Optimizing patterns of movement through these shapes, with consistent daily practice, improves performance and increases durability.

    • Simple cues and skill training are the first place to start for resolving pain and preventing injury.

  2. Tissue Mobilizations

    • When old injuries and tissue restrictions prevent adoption of the fundamental movement archetypes, soft tissue work, joint capsule mobilizations, and other techniques may be necessary to reclaim indigenous biomechanics.

    • My approach focuses on techniques clients can apply to themselves to reduce pain, regain positions, and restore function.

    • Many of these rely on simple tools like lacrosse balls and old bicycle inner tubes.

    • I also have a well-stocked kit for clients to sample from, to help them develop their own tool chest.

  3. Environment Design

    • After "putting the fire out" with skill development and mobilizations, addressing the root cause of limitations can prevent issues from recurring,

    • For those of us whose work does not regularly include hanging from one's arms, squatting deeply, balancing on one foot, or carrying objects overhead, setting up a movement-rich environment may be helpful.

    • Surroundings that support putting your body into athletic shapes throughout the day can reduce pain, increase or maintain mobility, and prevent re-emergence of old problems.

    • I can help recommend simple tools to enrich clients' workspaces, offer recommendations for office layout , and help design effective habits to move more and move better throughout the day in an office environment.

SERVICES

I offer three types of services:

  • For those seeking the highest level of personalized training, I offer 1:1 individual sessions in a client's home gym.

  • For those interested in a systematic introduction to movement and mobility, I am currently developing group classes in Hood River, focusing on fundamental movement patterns, daily practices, and habit modification,

  • I also offer consultation packages for clients interested in setting up movement-rich work environments at a home, office, or other place of business, to promote healthy habits for jobs that are sedentary or involve repetitive movements.
